I could spend all day playing with pictures. I love all the fd toys. I am found great difficulty in actually printing anything that I made. Might be use error, but it does look like they want you to order prints through them. Makes sense, good to know for student use though. I wonder how long it takes to get prints??

Week #4 thing 8 and 9

RSS exploration. Finally, I am learning about RSS. I still have a lot to explore, but after playing around with many different sides of the RSS function, I feel like I can at least ask some intelligent questions.
I wanted to find a current RSS feed for new YA book reviews and so I located Professor Nana's site and linked it to my classroom wiki. I restricted the feed to 3 items so that it was easier for students to manage and am really excited about this addition. It took me multiple attempts to make this happen. I was happy to find out this was a wiki issue, not a user issue. phew!
I set up my google reader and have some personalized feeds now.
I am finding that I keep moving back and forward through the discovery exercises, as I am completely random. The result is continued image generator posts, or maybe that is my next "thing" to post about.

Testing an email blog post

I was playing around in settings and saw that I could use this email address to post a blog. So I am testing that function. I will be really excited if it works. Just one more easy way to submit a blog.

Statement of my current condition :-)

Week #3 thing 5,6,7

I had a great time playing with flickr and picnik this week. I would like to spend more time learning about the sets and tags feature as I am finding with all of this great technology, organizing it in a way that I can effective use it, can be problematic. The Big Huge Labs site was full of great tools. I find myself wondering how can I get kids to use this in school. Would they need to have a google account? Each student now has a google account through our school so that they can use google docs, but we have had some problems with student access. Is there a liability issue that we need to think about? I love the ability to use flickr for teaching aids and I use flickr to find great pics for my wikispace, but I wonder about expanding it to student use. Does the district's permission slip cover it. I guess I would need to do an additional permission slip for each application that I want students to use. Since most of the programs need an email, that can be a problem for student accounts.
Hmmm . . . things to consider.

Here is a mosaic experiment that I created. It would have been fun if I had more pics to include. I really had fun with the mosaic format.

Week #3 third party flickr projects

My creation, originally uploaded by stacy.miller27.

I created this trading card on fd's Flickr Toys. I thought it would be fun to start recording our birthday cakes as my husband has started getting creative with them.
As for classroom uses, I can see some fun uses for this trading card application. They could create a trading card for each book that they read during the year and then present them to each other. We could use them as recommendation cards for reluctant readers. Or they could create cards for their favorite author or characters. Seems like there might be a lot of fun ways to use the trading cards in class.

This is another picture that I played with on picnic. I am trying to get back to the customize the size of the picture for the auto blog publish. I set it too big and I need to resize the picture.
This just before my daughter performed in her first talent show. She sang Animal Crackers in my Soup. We were so proud!
I'm going back to look for those setting.
I am so impressed with how easy blogging is when you use the auto publish function and type your blog in the body of the email. Very simple!

chocolate

I took this picture of my daughter after she smushed her hands into my birthday cake and smeared the chocolate all over her face. I thought her expression was very meaningful as most of us have had this type of chocolate moment.
I used Picnic to play with it and add the border and text, I think it looks pretty professional :-)

Week #2 thing 3 & 4

I've set up my blog and I think I registered it, but I'm not seeing my name on the Raven About Web 2.0 page yet. I might have to do a follow up email.
I noticed that since I already had a yahoo account, it was especially easy to start my blog.
Now the avatar was just straight fun. I was warned that I would spend a lot of time on stupid decisions, such as hairstyle and accessories . . . and it turned out to be completely true. The avatars are so fun and I am interested to see some opportunities for students to be able to use this. My current literature response question on my class wikispace is to name their top three literary characters of all time. Is it possible that they could create an avatar to represent each character? And possibly even start a blog using their created avatars in a discussion, taking the point of view of the character they chose? Hmmm . . . .

Week #1

I am very excited to be taking the Raven About Web 2.0 class. After reviewing the format of the classwork, I appreciate the bite-sized chunks that the class seems to be split into. I have created a blog before, but didn't have anyone else who wanted to write on it :-( I am looking forward to seeing some applications within my classroom. Even as a place that I can comment on the course work that we are addressing in class. My students are ready for more afterschool connections through the internet.
